For Immediate Release:
One could take a look at the baseball "lineage" in the Hobbie family and understand why Brian understands the trade.
His great uncle is Glen Hobbie who spent a good deal of the late 1950s and early 1960s with the Chicago Cubs as a pitcher, and his dad, Eric, pitched for NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
What Glen's great nephew and Eric's son has accomplished with the Prospect League's Terre Haute Rex has been remarkable. The right-handed starter, who pitched in 19 games with three starts for NCAA Division I Indiana University as a freshman and sophomore the past two seasons, has taken over the PL's earned run average lead by storm. Through a July 16 start against Lafayette, the all-star sported an astonishing 0.52 mark that featured just nine total runs surrendered and four earned runs given up in 51 and two-thirds innings of work. Those numbers have helped the defending Prospect League champion Rex keep themselves in familiar territory on the Western Division standings … near the top.
"My job is to go out there and get outs … just like any pitcher," he said. "I guess I don't see (the ERA numbers) being that far-fetched, as it's what you want to do. Obviously, to the level of where it is now, it's unexpected.
(The success) is due to a combination of coaches letting be your own coach and giving you the ability to work (on your own)," he added. "I also have a strong support system behind me with a great defense."
Hobbie's Prospect League success is part of a bigger plan. "I'm hoping to get drafted either next year or the following season," he said. "I've been fortunate to have been able to work with some great coaches at IU and Terre Haute and the winning culture in both programs is a plus."
The IU rising junior also has other post-graduate plans when his baseball career winds up. "I'm looking to go to dental school after graduation due to my work in a biology major," Hobbie noted. "It'd be a good opportunity for me to fall back on when my playing career is complete."
And yes there are other hobbies for Hobbie. "I like to be outdoors … fishing, hunting … even scuba diving as well as playing golf," he said.
Working to master other opportunities in his life … something Brian Hobbie is used to.
