Terre Haute REX 2015 Prospect League Champions

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Korie Vire hit a two-out, two RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Terre Haute REX a 3-1 lead over the West Virginia Miners at Bob Warn Field Thursday night in game two of the 2015 Prospect League Championship Series. Four outs later, the REX had captured their first ever Prospect League Championship.

The game started in a familiar way for the REX. It was a pitcher's duel between Terre Haute's Ethan Larrison and West Virginia's Tyler Rowe and they kept the game scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.

Andrew Gutierrez hit a two-out double for the REX and then scored on Luke Ringhofer's two-out, RBI double to give the REX a 1-0 lead through six innings.

West Virginia answered right back, as they've done numerous times this year. Hunter Vansau singled on the seventh pitch of his at bat to start the Miners' seventh. Zach Sterry followed with a double to left, placing runners at second and third with no one out. Dan Ward then lined out to third for the first out. Jonathan Weeks came on and was able to get a run-scoring infield single to the mound area, scoring Vansau to tie the game and knock the REX starting pitcher out of the game. With runners on the corners and one out, Sterry was cought trying to steal second by REX catcher Ringhofer. New REX pitcher Evan Miller then got Dom Iero to popup to third base and send the game to the seventh inning stretch tied at one.

Still tied at one, Miller worked a scoreless top of the eighth and the REX offense went to work in the bottom half. Kyle Kempf singled to right field to leadoff. Ricardo Ramirez was then hit by a Rowe pitch to put the REX at first and second with no one out. Rowe was then replaced on the mound by James Doubet, who hit Josh Wilson, the first batter he faced, to load the bases. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice nearly got the MIners out of the jam, Vire sent the first pitch he saw to right field for a two-run single that scored Ramirez and Kyle Blackburn (who was pinch running for Wilson) and the REX led the Miners 3-1.

Dylan Harvey worked a nine-pitch walk to leadoff the top of the ninth and three batters later, Dan Ward singled to guve the Miners a chance with runners at first and second with two down. Weeks then grounded out to second base and the REX rushed the field to celebrate their first Prospect League Championship.

Larrison pitched 6 1/3 innings as the starter for the REX, allowed just one run on three hits, walked one, and struck out for in a no decision. Miller (2-2) got the win in relief, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck one out.

Rowe (2-2) tossed seven innings as West Virginia's starter and got the loss. He allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out a batter. Doubet allowed one run on one hit and struck out a batter over one inning of relief.

Terre Haute's Andy DeJesus was the only player to have multiple hits in the contest, going three-for-four. Six other REX hitters collected one hit each.
