REX GM, Bruce Rosselli, is proud to announce two assistant coaches selected to the REX coaching staff for the 2015 season; Scott Lawson, pitching coach, and Juan Calderon hitting coach.
Entering his first season with the Terre Haute Rex, Scott Lawson, a Terre Haute native, and current Terre Haute North Vigo High School Pitching Coach, has been selected to the REX coaching staff, under Head Coach, Bobby Segal.
Lawson, currently coaching at Terre Haute North baseball, under head coach Fay Spetter, has plenty of experience in coaching and playing baseball. Lawson, who played for North Terre Haute North Vigo High School graduating in 1997, attended John A. Logan Community College as a pitcher, and after one year was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1998. His junior year he was recruited at University of Georgia, where he played in the College World Series in 2001, and helped win the SEC Conference Championships. Lawson's professional experience includes three years in the Frontier League (Kalamazoo Kings, DuBois County Dragons). Lawson also coached at Rose Hulman 2010-2013, as their pitching coach under head coach Jeff Jenkins, helping Derek Eitel, the first Rose Hulman student athlete in school history selected in professional draft. Lawson also played for the Quincy Gems team, now in the Prospect League, during the CICL days.
Juan Calderon, is named hitting coach for the REX. Calderon previously served as an assistant Head Coach at the College of the Albemarle (NC) where he helped primarily with the hitters. In the spring of 2014 COA had an overall .321 batting average and had realized an OBP of .387 as a team. From 2011 to 2013 Calderon was the top assistant at Iowa Lakes Community College where he assisted head coach Jason Nell with the Lakers' hitting, recruiting and also instructed the Lakers' outfielders and infielders; he also served as the team's third base coach on game day.
While in ILCC, six players were selected to the NJCAA region 11 All-Region team, and twenty four Lakers' signed to continue their education and baseball careers at different colleges and universities across the nation. In 2011 and 2012 Calderon was an assistant coach in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, working in 2011 with the Amsterdam Mohawks and 2012 as the hitting coach for the Cooperstown Hawkeyes. Coach Calderon helped lead the Mohawks to a 35-19 record, the team would also finish second in the PGBCL and they were nationally ranked among all collegiate summer teams. In 2014 and 2013, Calderon coached in the Northwoods League. The Caracas, Venezuela, native began his college playing career at Western Texas College as an infielder. Calderon Later transferred to Oakland City University to finish his playing career.
Bobby Segal, the REX 2014 field manager, is excited to have these two, well experienced coaches added to his staff, and looks forward to an even better season 2015.
