The Rex did it again.
The Terre Haute baseball squad clinched another playoff berth in the Prospect League with Thursday’s win at Kokomo and celebrated with another come-from-behind victory Friday at Bob Warn Field.
Reigning Prospect League Player of the Week Ricardo Ramirez came through with a ninth-inning triple to tie the game and Josh Wilson pushed home the go-ahead run when he took a David Anderson fastball on his right elbow.
The 3-2 victory put the Rex at 20-5 for the season as the third consecutive triumph gave the Rex a 6 1/2-game lead over second-place Danville.
Ramirez drove in his fifth run of the last week, taking a fastball on the outer half of the plate and knocking it to the warning track just a few feet inside the foul line.
“Last time I played this game and [Anderson] pitched, he threw me all fastballs,” Ramirez said.
“I was just sitting on the fastball and didn’t try to do too much. I’ve got on approach where I’ve got confidence on. Just trying to help the team win, that’s all.”
Ramirez said the Rex developed a strong collective swagger early in the season with several comeback wins in the first week.
“It happened early on in the season. We came back and a lot of guys bought in and started believing in it. It doesn’t matter if you’re winning or losing,’ Ramirez said. “We still want to keep winning and keep playing hard. It’s a good win tonight and should be a good one tomorrow.”
Left-handed starter Mason Kutruff put together a quality start but didn’t earn the win. He had allowed only three hits going into the seventh inning, but he loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Damon Olds got out of the jam and gave way to Mitch Schulewitz (3-1) in the ninth.
Like the .295 hitting Ramirez, Kutruff, a Martinsville native, looks poised to make the All-Star team. He kept his earned-run average at a dominant 1.13 for the season.
“Not a bad outing. My pitch count kind of high so he went ahead and took me out. We played good defense and limited the big inning. Held them to one run in the second. Good team win,” Kutruff said
